Research and Market Exclusivities

Creating value through unique plant opportunities.

Working with commercial business partners

Grasslanz Technology Ltd invests in the development of new forage technologies either on its own or with commercial companies. Co-investment by commercial companies gives them some exclusivity with regard to the marketing and sale of technologies developed. Grasslanz Technology Ltd and PGG Wrightson Seeds Ltd are involved in two joint ventures; one unincorporated (Endophyte Innovation) and the other incorporated (Grasslands Innovation Ltd). The exclusivities this affords both parties are described here.

..........................................................................................................................................

Endophyte Innovation

Grasslanz Technology has an exclusive R&D agreement to combine the respective skills of Grasslanz Technology, AgResearch and PGG Wrightson Seeds to produce marketable Neotyphodium ryegrass and fescue endophytes. The parties will undertake research and development projects to which Grasslanz Technology and PGG Wrightson Seeds will each contribute funding on the basis of their IP share. All information relating to any research and development projects will be shared with the parties. Endophyte Innovation was established to provide support to relevant science programmes put forward to the NZ Government (originally FRST and now MBIE), engage appropriate industry bodies in support of the research and development and secure commercially sound licensing contracts with other seed companies. Endophyte Innovation in its current format has been in existence since 2010 but it is built on R&D relationships that predate the merger between PGG Seeds, Agricom and Wrightson Seeds going back as far as 1994.

..........................................................................................................................................

Grasslands Innovation Ltd

Grasslands Innovation Ltd (GIL) is an incorporated Joint Venture between PGG Wrightson Seeds Ltd and Grasslanz Technology Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of AgResearch, that develops innovative forage grass, legume and herb technologies for pastoral farming systems. Its products are licensed exclusively to PGG Wrightson Seeds and are marketed in New Zealand by PGG Wrightson Seeds and Agricom, and internationally by PGG Wrightson Seeds and a range of 3rd party companies. These products are commonly sold under the internationally registered Grasslands™ brand.

While GIL has only been in existence since 2006, it is built on R&D relationships that predate the merger between PGG Seeds, Agricom and Wrightson Seeds going back as far as 1987. GIL was formed to ensure better retention of New Zealand plant breeding capability, better governance and a long-term focus on product delivery. To date this partnership has produced more than 100 forage cultivars across a wide range of temperate forage grasses, legumes and herbs.
Income for GIL is generated predominantly from royalties on the sales of cultivars which is then reinvested into developing new cultivars that meet market needs.

GIL outsources all of its research, development and support services. In particular GIL contracts research from a range of R&D providers to access new technologies and knowledge that has the potential to add value to pastoral agriculture with AgResearch being the main research provider.

As partners in the joint venture, Grasslanz Technology, AgResearch and PGG Wrightson Seeds will not undertake plant breeding or commercialisation of cultivars of the following species, for use as forage, either for itself or with or on behalf of parties other than Grasslands Innovation:

  • Lolium species (ryegrass), Festuca species (fescue) and hybrids thereof;
  • Interspecific hybrids between the species Trifolium repens (white clover) and T. ambiguum (Caucasian clover) ;
  • Cichorium intybus (chicory);
  • Trifolium pratense (red clover).

This exclusivity. does not include "biotechnology" which is defined as “all activities other than plant breeding associated with genetically manipulating plant characteristics and traits and will in most cases relate to the study and manipulation of plant DNA".

Outside of these exclusivities Grasslanz Technology Ltd can provide investment and project management for the development of plant based technologies with any commercial party.
